Portrait of Arthur Atherley as an Etonian, circa 1791
Thomas Lawrence (England, Bristol, 1769 - 1830)
Arthur Atherley poses for a portrait on the occasion of his graduation from Eton College, just outside London. Young men who attended Eton went on to Oxford or Cambridge for university study, joined the royal military or embarked on a career straight away. Atherley set out for a career in banking. By his mid-thirties, he was a member of Parliament.
The artist, Sir Thomas Lawrence, was just a few years older than Atherley when he made this portrait in 1791. He distinguished himself with dramatic, lively portraits that flattered the aspirations of his wealthy aristocratic patrons.
The portrait once hung in the Santa Monica home of Marion Davies, companion of the great publishing magnate and art collector, William Randolph Hearst. Hearst is one of the great benefactors in the history of LACMA – he eventually contributed more than 900 works of art to the museum, including this excellent example of British portraiture.

You do not need to ask my permission to share this. Please link it widely.
I do not doubt for a second that those involved in KONY 2012 have great intentions, nor do I doubt for a second that Joseph Kony is a very evil man. But despite this, I’m strongly opposed to the KONY 2012 campaign.
